The Al Dhafra Round-The-Clock project in Abu Dhabi, developed by Masdar, has been described as a global model for continuous and reliable renewable energy supply. The Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) made this assessment, according to the source text.

The official, Francesco La Camera, noted that the United Arab Emirates has become a significant global player in renewable energy and international energy cooperation. This status has been achieved through major investments in solar power, storage technologies, and energy infrastructure, demonstrating that energy-producing nations can contribute to the worldwide energy transition. The UAE continues to expand its renewable energy capacity while also investing in green hydrogen and low-carbon industry.

Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), La Camera stated that as IRENA’s host country, the UAE has consistently supported international dialogue and collaboration on renewable energy. It has also helped mobilize financing and partnerships for clean energy deployment in emerging and developing economies. He emphasized that the UAE has helped shift the global debate from whether renewables can scale to how quickly countries can accelerate deployment.

La Camera said that IRENA’s 31st Council meeting highlighted that the global energy transition is entering a new phase. The strategic priorities of member states now focus on energy security and economic competitiveness. Member countries reaffirmed the need to accelerate renewable energy deployment while investing in grids, storage, and infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand reliably and affordably. Discussions also covered practical pathways to electrify end-use sectors across power, transport, industry, and digitalization.

A major outcome of the council was stronger alignment around implementation. Governments exchanged experiences on scaling investment, digitalization, infrastructure planning, and regional cooperation to accelerate progress. La Camera added that the council meets at a critical moment, as the world faces what some call the biggest energy crisis in history. He stated that geopolitical tensions, skyrocketing energy demand, and fossil fuel volatility show that current energy systems are not fit for purpose.

IRENA believes the next frontier of the transition is electrification. According to La Camera, energy demand is rising in transport, industry, buildings, and digitalization. The transition must now focus on electrifying those end-uses. He remarked that global electrification must rise from around 20 percent of energy consumption today to approximately 35 percent by 2035 and over 50 percent by 2050.
