Amazon Launches New Feature to Boost Resilience and Reduce Impact of Cloud Outages – Jorda

Amazon has developed a new mechanism designed to reduce the impact of recurring disruptions in its cloud server system (AWS) or issues related to the Domain Name System (DNS), which can cause services and websites to go offline for hours at a time.اضافة اعلان

According to an official statement, the company introduced a new feature that it says will make “such outages less harmful to global services.”

Amazon explained that several customers had requested “additional capabilities to enhance DNS resiliency, in line with business continuity requirements and regulatory obligations.”

The company noted that organizations operating in regulated sectors—such as banking, financial services, technology, and cloud-based SaaS platforms—need to ensure they can update DNS configurations even during unexpected disruptions in one region. This ability allows them to activate backup resources or redirect traffic when needed.

Recovery in 60 Minutes

In response to these demands, Amazon unveiled a new feature designed to provide a recovery time objective (RTO) of 60 minutes in case of disruptions in its US-East cloud region.

The company stated that the feature aims to “ensure customers can implement DNS changes within 60 minutes from the onset of any outage affecting the region.”

While the feature gives users greater flexibility in managing failures, AWS implicitly acknowledged that a one-hour recovery window may still allow regional issues to cascade into widespread outages—especially if the company fails to meet the designated timeframe.

AWS pointed out that the feature was developed following multiple incidents in the US-East region over recent years, including what it described as the “October 20 incident,” as well as another issue affecting virtual machines only days later. Records also show major outages in 2021 and 2023.

In previous incidents, botnet networks exploited AWS outages to launch large-scale cyberattacks across nearly 28 countries, highlighting the region’s sensitivity to global internet infrastructure.

Warnings and Continued Explanations

Gartner had warned in 2022 that the US-East region represents a “weak point” in AWS’s architecture, noting that its massive size and complexity could limit the company’s ability to manage crises effectively.

The significance of Amazon’s new feature lies in its timing—coming less than six weeks after a major outage in the US-East region, which sparked widespread criticism. The company now returns with an announcement of improvements aimed at strengthening resilience and enhancing recovery efficiency.

Observers say the launch reflects Amazon’s recognition of the substantial risks associated with this critical region, alongside rising pressure from institutions—including government and private entities worldwide—that depend on cloud services to run their core systems.
