Clean Energy starts RNG production at Idaho dairy farm
June 9, 2026
California-headquartered renewable energy firm Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE) has started renewable natural gas (RNG) production at East Valley Cattle dairy farm in Jerome, Idaho, marking its eighth operational dairy RNG site.
The facility is equipped with with six anaerobic digesters, a large-scale wastewater treatment system, and manure separation technology designed to take in over 5 million gallons of manure from over 35,000 cows each day.
According to CLNE, the East Valley RNG facility represents one of the largest single-site dairy farms and RNG facilities in North America.
The RNG produced on-site is being injected directly into the interstate pipeline to provide renewable fuel to the regional transport sector.
The waste byproducts, from anaerobic digestion, will be used as fertiliser on the dairy farm to create a circular economy and support farm operations.
In Q1 2026, the East Valley RNG facility was approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under its Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) programme.
The project is backed by CE bp Renew Co, CLNE’s joint venture with BP Products North America, a subsidiary of British multinational oil and gas company BP.
According to the US EPA, in April 2021, there were 221 anaerobic digestion systems processing dairy cow manure in the US.
In June 2025, the American Biogas Council (ABC) reported an increase to 471 systems, representing a significant domestic expansion.
The US EPA notes over two-thirds of US dairy cows are located across eight states: Idaho, California, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan.
RNG is known as biomethane in markets outside the US.
