‘God Of War’: Frederick E.O. Toye Set To Direct As Pre-Production & Casting Are Underway O

December 1, 2025

EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video’s series adaptation of the popular God Of War video game has added another high-profile creative auspice. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) has been tapped to direct the first two episodes of the action-adventure series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. He joins Ronald D. Moore, the series’ showrunner, writer and executive producer.

Pre-production is underway in Vancouver and casting has begun on God of War, which has received a two-season order. Originally greenlighted by Prime Video in December 2022, the project kicked into high gear following Moore’s arrival as new showrunner last fall in a creative overhaul.

It was followed by Prime Video quietly doubling the order to two seasons earlier this year. That is not unusual for series of this scope when a platform believes in the creative because such shows involve a lot of upfront world-building costs related to production design, set building, costumes and props that are better amortized over multiple seasons.

Based on PlayStation‘s hugely popular ancient mythology-themed video game, God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus — the roles that are now casting — as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions under his overall deal at Sony TV.

Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, Ben McGinnis, and Jeff Ketcham serve as co-executive producers.

Toye has directed over 130 hours of television, including four episodes of FX’s acclaimed Shōgun, winning a Directing for a Drama Series Emmy for “Crimson Sky.”

He has become a go-to director for Prime Video over the last several years, directing multiple episodes of Fallout, on which he also serves as executive producer, The Boys and The Terminal List. He just completed directing the opening episodes of the streamer’s upcoming series Terminal List: Dark Wolf and Bloodaxe.

Toye, whose episodic directing credits also include Lost, The Good Wife, Person Of Interest, American Gods, The Walking Dead, See, Lost In Space, Westworld, Watchmen and Snowpiercer, is repped by CAA and Sloane Offer Weber and Dern.
