A mature street tree collapsed across W44th Street in Hell’s Kitchen on Sunday afternoon, crushing two vehicles, ripping up the sidewalk and shutting down traffic between 9th and 10th Avenues.

The large thornless honeylocust came down shortly before 1:45pm outside 451 W44th Street, pulling its entire root system out of the ground and lifting several large slabs of concrete as it fell. The trunk landed across the roadway, crushing a parked car and one of Amazon’s dark blue, battery-powered, pedal-assist cargo E-Quads — the company’s compact delivery vehicles that function like mini delivery trucks.
