Meta’s next-gen XR headset: ultra-light, puck-powered
November 28, 2025
Meta* is working on a next-generation XR headset that, according to insider Nima Zeighami, may arrive without the familiar Quest branding. The standout idea is a split design: the compute unit and battery move into an external “puck,” which takes a significant load off the visor itself.
This architecture is meant to cut weight dramatically. For context, the Quest 3 comes in at about 515 grams, while a headset that offloads the hardware could drop below 200 grams. The new model is also rumored to bring eye and face tracking—features seen in higher-end devices like the Quest Pro—and to boost pixel density for a crisper image than the Quest 3. At the same time, overall resolution may still land below that of the Galaxy XR and the Vision Pro.
The target price is around $880, and controllers might not be included. Even so, it would undercut flagship competitors by a fair margin. The direction signals a comfort-first approach that favors lighter hardware and expressive input; for everyday use, that trade-off could matter more than chasing the biggest resolution numbers.
