Rick Moranis Reprising ‘Spaceballs’ Role After Stepping Away From Acting Amid Wife’s 1991

Rick Moranis is back! The iconic ‘80s actor is set to reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet in the upcoming sequel Spaceballs 2.
Amazon MGM, the studio behind the sequel, confirmed the Little Shop of Horrors actor, 72, will return to the big screen alongside costars Bill Pullman, Mel Brooks, George Wyner and Daphne Zuniga.
Josh Gad, Andrew Carrigan, Keke Palmer and Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman, will also join the star-studded ensemble.
Moranis has kept a low profile since stepping away from the spotlight following the 1991 death of his wife, Ann Belsky. He hasn’t starred in a film since 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.
“I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage to raise my kids and to do the traveling involved in making movies,” he told USA Today in 2005. “So I took a little bit of a break. And the little bit of a break turned into a longer break, and then I found that I really didn’t miss it.”
In the years since, Moranis has stayed active with guest appearances in shows like The Goldbergs and voice acting work. He also made a brief appearance as himself in a 2020 Mint Mobile commercial alongside Ryan Reynolds.
Spaceballs 2 is scheduled for a 2027 release.
