September 25, 2024

Steuben County is set to expand its renewable energy capacity with the approval of 36 additional wind turbines across Prattsburgh, Avoca, Cohocton, Howard, and Wheeler. The state Office of Renewable Energy Siting gave the green light to the Prattsburgh Wind LLC project, which will cover 53 acres and generate 147 megawatts of power—enough for 62,000 homes.

The project will generate over $1.2 million annually in tax revenue for local municipalities and provide significant payments to landowners. It’s also expected to create 81 construction jobs and eight full-time positions once operational.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of projects like Prattsburgh Wind during New York’s Climate Week, as the state pushes toward its goal of 70% renewable electricity by 2030. This approval follows the state’s commitment to a zero-emissions electricity sector by 2040.
