Integrating Solar and Wind Global experience and emerging challenges

Solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind power have rapidly grown, doubling their installed capacity and nearly doubling their contribution to global electricity generation between 2018 and 2023. This report emphasizes the urgent need for timely integration of these renewable energy sources to meet global decarbonisation goals and increasing electricity demands by 2030. Failure to implement integration measures could result in the loss of up to 15% of solar PV and wind energy generation by 2030, leading to continued reliance on fossil fuels and reduced CO2 emissions cuts.

The report includes a global assessment of variable renewable energy (VRE) integration across 50 power systems, representing nearly 90% of global solar and wind generation. It highlights proven strategies for integrating VRE, especially in systems at early stages of adoption. Additionally, the report updates the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) framework to address challenges in systems with higher VRE penetration levels, such as ensuring stability and flexibility.

To achieve large-scale integration of solar PV and wind, the report calls for strategic government action, infrastructure improvements, and regulatory reforms. Robust data, collaboration, and prioritisation of VRE integration are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring a sustainable energy future.
