Danish energy company Ørsted has put forward a comprehensive proposal for the Long Island Wind project to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

The project is estimated to supply renewable energy to one million homes in New York.

The initiative is set to bolster Ørsted’s Northeast Hub, contributing to the region’s sustainable energy future.

Long Island Wind will generate more than 1.4GW of offshore wind energy, and is set for commercial operation by 2033.

Ørsted’s proposed project has the potential to create several jobs and drive workforce development.

The project represents a multi-billion dollar investment in New York’s economy, adding to Ørsted’s existing financial commitments in the state.

This includes more than $700m directed to Suffolk County for the Sunrise Wind project, demonstrating the company’s ongoing investment in New York’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The execution of the Long Island Wind project is contingent upon selection by NYSERDA, successful negotiation of an offshore wind renewable energy certificate agreement with NYSERDA, and Ørsted’s final investment decision.

Ørsted manages South Fork Wind, New York’s inaugural offshore wind farm and the first utility-scale offshore wind project in the US.

The company is also in the process of constructing Sunrise Wind, expected to be New York’s second offshore wind facility.

In June 2024, Ørsted completed the construction of the 518MW Helena Energy Center, a project that combined wind and solar energy, in Bee County, Texas.
