HEXA Renewables, an independent power producer in the Asia-Pacific region, has partnered with the Taiwanese Government’s offshore solar division to successfully commission the world’s largest offshore floating solar power plant.

The Changhua County-based project covers four plots of land with a total area of 347ha.

The first phase of the project involved two plots (1 and 2), with a total capacity of 181MWac. This phase was developed and constructed by Chenya Energy, a former subsidiary of HEXA’s current investor, I Squared Capital, in 2020.

Following the divestment of Chenya Energy in the same year, HEXA continued the development of the project’s second phase in partnership with the Taiwanese government.

This included the addition of 192MWac of power generation capacity, bringing the total capacity of the project to 373MWac, making it the largest offshore floating solar project in the world.

HEXA’s floating solar project represents a significant step towards Taiwan’s decarbonisation goals, which aim for 20GW of renewable energy capacity by 2025 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The project is claimed to reduce CO₂ emissions by 136,000t annually and is capable of providing renewable energy to around 74,000 households in Taiwan.

Built on land leased from the Taiwanese Government, this floating solar project not only enhances the country’s renewable energy infrastructure but also bolsters the country’s position in innovative floating solar technology.

Drawing on expertise, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability, the project is expected to benefit the Taiwanese community by improving energy security and supporting global efforts to combat climate change.
