A groundbreaking renewable energy initiative, the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH), is set to emerge in Western Australia, promising to eclipse the scale of renewable energy production worldwide. Spearheaded by developers InterContinental Energy and CWP Global, the project’s recent filings propose an expansion from an initial 50GW to a staggering 70GW capacity.

This ambitious project aims to generate over 200 terawatt-hours (TWh) of clean energy annually, approaching Australia’s total power generation of 274TWh as reported last year. Once completed, WGEH could produce more electricity than the entire power fleets of several mid-sized nations combined.

Spanning approximately 22,700 square kilometers of coastal desert, the area designated for WGEH exceeds the size of countries like Slovenia and El Salvador. Plans include the installation of up to 3,000 wind turbines, with capacities ranging between 7MW and 20MW each—surpassing the current largest 15MW onshore wind turbine made by China’s Sany.

Additionally, the site will feature up to 60 million photovoltaic panels distributed across 35 designated solar farms. The ambitious scale of WGEH not only ensures a substantial boost in power generation but also supports the production of approximately 3.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen output is intended for both local and international markets, with green ammonia slated as the primary export product to minimize environmental impact.

The project aligns with both state and national objectives to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. It is planned to unfold in seven developmental stages, corresponding to market demand growth, and is expected to span several decades.

In collaboration with Mirning Green Energy Limited, a subsidiary of the Mirning Traditional Lands Aboriginal Corporation, WGEH not only represents a leap forward in sustainable energy but also in community and economic development. This project illustrates a significant shift towards larger, more efficient renewable energy models poised to redefine global energy standards.
