Jaws of life used to pry open ATMs at Shawn Kemp’s SODO cannabis dispensary

January 16, 2025

SEATTLE – Investigators with the Seattle Police Department are looking for the person responsible for burglarizing Supersonic legend Shawn Kemp’s business on Saturday, January 11.

What we know:

According to SPD, the burglary happened at “Kemp’s Cannabis” located in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood.

The individual caught on camera was first seen driving on the sidewalk outside the business at 6:15 a.m. Video goes on to show the masked man park a green truck and disable a camera on the outside of the building.

Using an axe and what appears to be a hydraulic rescue tool, better known by firefighters as the “jaws of life,” he smashes through the glass and gates before heading for the ATMs.

“We’re looking at anywhere from $25,000 to $30,000 in loss and damages,” said co-owner Tran Du.

Du tells FOX 13 once inside, the masked burglar used the jaws of life to pry open the ATMs, accessing the cash. He leaves the store, putting the cash in the vehicle before returning to grab merchandise.

Time stamps from surveillance footage shows the burglar was inside the business for 20 minutes. Officers with SPD are seen entering the building an hour after the break-in.

“The new thing in Seattle is that the police have to have a visual confirmation before they will dispatch police,” said Du, referring the burglary alarm call. “There was a breakdown in communication from the alarm company. It’s unfortunate.”

As of October, SPD’s new policy for responding to alarm calls is as follows:

“SPD will only dispatch officers to calls from alarm companies with supporting evidence, such as audio, video, panic alarms or eyewitness evidence that a person is illegally entering or attempting to enter a residence or commercial property.”

Du tells FOX 13 he was traveling and was unreachable by phone, as was the business’ secondary contact. By the time a 911 call was placed at 7:15 a.m., confirming the incident, the suspect was long gone. Officers arrived within seven minutes of that call.

“The policy needs to change,” said Du. “It’s hurting small businesses. It’s not just cannabis businesses that are affected, everyone’s being affected.”
