Amazon offers Alabama woman injured in New Orleans terror attack full pay, counseling

January 3, 2025

An Alabama woman who was injured during the New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans will receive full pay from her employer while she recovers.

Amazon, the online retail giant that operates a warehouse in Mobile, said in a statement Friday that it will provide full support, including pay, to 23-year-old Alexis Scott-Windham of Mobile.

Windham was injured in her right foot after being struck by the truck driven by the attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42. She also suffered a gunshot wound to the same foot during the attack.

“We’ve reached out to Ms. Scott-Windham to offer her our full support, including pay, as she recovers from this senseless act of violence,” said Kelly Nantel, spokesperson with Amazon.

“We wish her a fully recovery and look forward to welcoming her ack to work once she’s able.”

A story by NOLA.com on Thursday quoted Scott-Windham saying she was denied a “leave of absence” to recover. She also expressed fear of retaliation that will require her to find a new job.

Amazon learned Friday that Scott-Windham had mistakenly requested the wrong type of leave.

“They called me this morning and cleared it up with me,” she said. “They called me and made sure I’m getting paid time off through the recovery time.”

Scott-Windham, an employee for the past three months at the Amazon sortation center in Mobile, also told AL.com that she will receive paid counseling by Amazon as well.

Scott-Windham narrowly escaped death in the terror attack that left 15 dead, and approximately 35 injured and shocked the nation as 2025 began. She was taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans where she spent Wednesday and was treated for injuries until she was released to her mother. Her injuries will require a return trip to the hospital within the next two weeks.
