Amazon workers strike in seven states. Will Massachusetts be affected?

YEAH, WELL, MARIA, THE COMPANY TELLS US THAT DESPITE THIS STRIKE, IT WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM. IT SAYS MAKING HOLIDAY DELIVERIES ON TIME. IN FACT, AT THIS FACILITY IN NORWOOD, WE SAW VANS COMING AND GOING. IT SEEMED LIKE BUSINESS AS USUAL IN OTHER PLACES OF THE COUNTRY. THE STRIKERS WERE HARD TO MISS. WORKERS TO ORGANIZE FROM NEW YORK TO CALIFORNIA. WORKERS PICKED UP STRIKE SIGNS AND PICKETED OUTSIDE. SEVEN AMAZON WAREHOUSES IN FOUR STATES. WE’RE GOING TO BE FIGHTING UNTIL WE GET WHAT WE DESERVE. TEAMSTERS HAVE BEEN ORGANIZING WORKERS IN THESE FACILITIES AND SAY THE COMPANY MISSED A DEADLINE TO NEGOTIATE A CONTRACT. WE LIVE IN ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE CITIES IN THE COUNTRY. WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO LIVE HERE. THE STRIKE DOES NOT AFFECT THE MORE THAN 15 AMAZON WAREHOUSES IN MASSACHUSETTS. TEAMSTERS DID DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE AN AMAZON FACILITY IN JOHNSTON, RHODE ISLAND, WHERE THEY SAY THEY’RE TRYING TO CONVINCE WORKERS TO JOIN THE UNION. YOU KNOW, UPS DOES THE SAME EXACT WORK. THEY GET DOUBLE THE WAGES. WE NEED BETTER WAGES, BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS WITHIN THE FACILITIES AND BETTER RETIREMENT FOR THESE AMAZON WORKERS. AMAZON OFFICIALS SAY MANY OF THE STRIKING DRIVERS DO NOT EVEN WORK FOR THEM DIRECTLY, BUT RATHER FOR THIRD PARTY CONTRACTORS. THE COMPANY SAYS THE STRIKERS REPRESENT A TINY FRACTION OF THEIR 800,000 WORKERS IN THE U.S. AND BECAUSE OF THAT, AMAZON INSISTS HOLIDAY DELIVERIES WILL NOT BE AFFECTED. BUT ONE EXPERT SAYS THE TIMING OF THE STRIKE IS NO ACCIDENT. TYPICALLY, I THINK THAT UNIONS ARE WELL SERVED BY FINDING OPPORTUNE MOMENTS WHERE THEY CAN PUT A CRUNCH AGAINST THE COMPANY ITSELF. TONIGHT, THE TEAMSTERS HAVE NOT SAID HOW MANY STRIKERS ARE INVOLVED IN THIS WORK ACTION, NOR HOW LONG THE STRIK

Workers at seven Amazon facilities across the U.S. have walked off the job, in the midst of the holiday season.

From New York to California, Amazon workers picked up strike signs and picketed outside seven Amazon warehouses in four states.

“We’re going to be fighting until we get what we deserve,” a striking worker said.

The Teamsters union has been organizing workers in these facilities and said the company missed a deadline to negotiate a contract.

“We live in one of the most expensive cities in the country,” a striking worker said. “We want to be able to afford to live here.”

The strike does not affect the more than 15 Amazon warehouses in Massachusetts.

However, Teamsters did demonstrate outside an Amazon facility in Johnston, Rhode Island, where they said they’re trying to convince workers to join their union.

“You know, UPS does the same exact work [and] they get double the wages,” Teamsters Organizer Corey Levesque said. “We need better wages, better working conditions within the facilities and better retirement for these Amazon workers.”

Amazon officials said many of the striking drivers do not even work directly for them, but rather for third-party contractors.

The company said the strikers represent a tiny fraction of their 800,000 workers in the U.S.

As a result, Amazon insists holiday deliveries will not be affected.

However, one expert said the timing of the strike is no accident.

“Typically, I think that unions are well served by finding opportune moments where they can put a crunch against the company itself,” Emory Economist and Finance Professor Tom Smith said.

So far the Teamsters have not said how many workers are taking part in the strike, nor how long it might last.
