Apple Is Developing a Doorbell That Unlocks With Your Face, Report Says

December 23, 2024

Move over, Ring: Apple is reportedly working on a smart doorbell — one that unlocks for household members it recognizes.

Apple’s doorbell would have advanced facial recognition technology that wirelessly connects to a deadbolt lock, according to a Bloomberg report. The doorbell would unlock the door for people it recognizes, functioning similarly to Face ID on the iPhone. The product is not expected to launch until the end of 2025 at the earliest.

The report aligns with Apple’s broader vision to deepen its footprint in the smart home market, where it has historically lagged behind competitors like Google and Amazon.

The company did not respond to a request for comment.

While there are already smart locks using facial recognition on the market, Apple may have a competitive edge in this space due to its strong commitment to user privacy, which potentially could make consumers more comfortable adopting Apple services and devices in and around their homes.

Apple is also developing an in-home security camera to rival products such as Google’s Nest and Amazon’s Ring, Bloomberg added. The camera is expected to integrate with Apple’s rumored smart home hub, designed to control connected devices within the household.

A move into the security camera market could also boost adoption of iCloud subscriptions, where video footage from these devices would be stored, according to the report.
