Cargill is expanding its footprint in Brazil’s renewable energy sector by acquiring the remaining 50% stake in SJC Bioenergia. The move gives Cargill full control of the sugar-energy company, reinforcing its long-term investment strategy in the region.

Cargill has been a partner in SJC Bioenergia since 2011 and sees this acquisition as a strategic step in strengthening its presence in Brazil.

“As Cargill celebrates 60 years of operations in Brazil, it continues to believe and invest in the country and in Brazilian agriculture. In recent years, we have invested more than R$6.8 billion in our operations and, if completed after due approval from regulatory bodies, having SJC as a company 100% controlled by Cargill is an important reinforcement of our growth strategy in renewable energy,” said Paulo Sousa, president of Cargill in Brazil.

SJC Bioenergia, founded in 2006, operates two agro-industrial units in Goiás—Quirinópolis and Cachoeira Dourada. The company employs 4,500 people and produces raw sugar, ethanol (hydrated and anhydrous), corn oil, and high-protein dried distillers’ grains (DDGs), while also generating electricity.

The acquisition is pending approval from Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) and must meet all contractual conditions before completion.
