January 4, 2025

Conclave is dominating the 2025 awards season with 11 Critics Choice nominations, six Golden Globe nods, and seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Here’s how to stream the papal mystery thriller from home before the major ceremonies.

Based on Robert Harris’s bestselling novel, Conclave centers on Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), the Dean of the College of Cardinals, as he oversees the secretive process of the Conclave, where the world’s cardinals gather to choose the next pope.

“Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, participating in the selection of a new pope,” the official synopsis reads. “Surrounded by powerful religious leaders in the halls of the Vatican, he soon uncovers a trail of deep secrets that could shake the very foundation of the Roman Catholic Church.”

Directed by German-Austrian filmmaker Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) and written by Peter Straughan, the religious drama debuted in theaters on Oct. 25. Two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes heads the star-studded cast, featuring Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, and Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes.

In his review for GMA, movie critic Peter Travers writes, “Ralph Fiennes delivers a master class in acting in Edward Berger’s juicy, jolting mystery thriller that uses the fictional election of a new pope in Rome to mirror America’s own dirty politics.”

Lindsey Bahr from the Associated Press noted that Conclave “might not have much new or interesting to say about the Catholic Church, but it is a deliriously fun watch in the way that tense, smart thrillers with an ensemble of great actors can be.”
