Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal, officers remind public

December 24, 2024

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A 2024 impaired driving survey from the cannabis control authority says three out of 10 Virginians believe those who consume marijuana are safer drivers.

On the other side, 47% of people who have used marijuana in the past three months plan for a sober ride home.

That is up 5% since the 2022 survey.

Officers and officials are reminding people that no type of impaired driving is allowed.

“Bottom line the survey results were a mixed bag,” The Chief Officer of Regulation Policy for Cannabis Control Authority Jeremy Preiss said. “They indicated that we still have a lot of work to do.”

Albemarle County Police Department is warning about the same thing.

“Make sure you do have a plan to get to your next destination if you’re not gonna stay where you’re at,” ACPD Senior Police Officer David Sprouse said.

Sprouse says there is nothing wrong with having fun but make sure you have a plan so you can keep yourself and others safe.
