Eversource has purchased a 26-acre section of the Mystic property from Constellation Energy to support Massachusetts’ clean energy transition while ensuring safe and reliable service across New England. Although specific plans for the site are not yet in place, its location, history, and infrastructure make it ideal for a versatile energy interconnection hub.

This hub could support renewable energy sources like wind, hydro, battery storage, and nuclear, while also meeting the energy needs of key users in the region. Over the next year, Eversource will work with Massachusetts officials, Everett leaders, and other stakeholders to develop a plan for the site, which is near the proposed soccer stadium in Everett, to enhance electric reliability and drive progress toward the state’s electrification and climate goals.

He also added, “Purchasing this site will allow us to transform it into a premier energy interconnection hub that enhances reliability for the entire New England region, building on Massachusetts’ reputation as a national leader with its collaborative approach to the ongoing energy transition. We are eager to work with the local community, state officials and other key stakeholders to develop innovative plans for the property that will deliver carbon-free energy to customers as part of a reliable, equitable, and cost-effective energy future for our region.”

Eversource’s acquisition of the Mystic property presents a significant opportunity to strengthen the electric grid, lower costs by easing future congestion on the regional transmission network, and boost local economic growth. The company is dedicated to working closely with stakeholders to create a well-rounded transmission plan that meets diverse needs. This plan will focus on improving renewable energy connections to the grid, ensuring waterway accessibility, and fostering workforce development to support the expanding climate tech industry.
