LADWP has an $87B plan to run L.A. on 100% renewable energy

Can you imagine Los Angeles running almost exclusively on battery power? There’s a plan floating around City Hall that suggests it could be possible – for a cool $87 billion.
The pricey plan from the Department of Water and Power would have L.A. getting 100% of its electricity from clean energy sources within two decades.
“It’s ambitious,” Councilmember Bob Blumenfield told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener. You can’t achieve great things if you don’t have great goals.”
One of the biggest challenges that was identified was the cost of acquiring the massive battery systems that would be needed to store the solar-generated power generated during the day so that it could be used at night.
“The holy grail for all of the energy stuff is storage,” Blumenfield said. “There’s enough renewable energy a million times over to run the whole world, you know, just the amount of energy that comes down from the sun. The hard part is capturing it and storing it.”

He added that as renewable energy becomes more storable, “the whole financial dynamic changes” and we’ll be less reliant on fossil fuels.
