Law requiring fishing licenses expected to generate $1 million annually
February 7, 2025
The Department of Land and Natural Resources estimates a new law requiring non-residents to purchase licenses for recreational fishing will generate $1 million a year.
The revenue from license sales will go towards supporting fishing in the state via fish aggregation devices, artificial reefs, stock enhancement and other fish restoration projects conducted by the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources, according to a news release.
The fishing licenses cost $20 for one day, $40 for a week, and $70 for a year. Nonresidents under age 15 can fish without licenses, as can active-duty military personnel and their families.
In June 2021, the Hawaii State Legislature passed a law requiring nonresidents of Hawaii to purchase recreational marine fishing licenses. Last year, DLNR adopted rules to implement the law, which took effect on May 2, 2024.
