Looking to volunteer in Dallas? Here are a few options

January 1, 2025

There are multiple local organizations in Dallas where residents can volunteer year-round.

Organizations offer volunteering opportunities for those who want to give back to the community and learn more about the environment, from planting trees and cleaning up trash to restoring habitats and gardening at local farms.

Some nonprofits offer volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups of schools, families, and businesses that want to contribute to the organization’s mission.

Greenspace Dallas

For those trying to volunteer for the first time who don’t know where to start, Greenspace Dallas, a nonprofit that restores and enhances urban greenspaces in the Trinity River Corridor, can be a good place to begin.

Greenspace Dallas offers an opportunity to clean up trash along the river every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Volunteers can bring their kids and dogs. The crew meets in different locations every week. Volunteers are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and attire for outdoor activities and bring water.

Trinity River Audubon Center

The Trinity River Audubon Center, a bird and wildlife sanctuary in Dallas, offers one-time and ongoing volunteering opportunities. For those looking for a one-time option to help, extra hands are needed most Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to focus on habitat restoration at the center. Some of the work is focused on helping the ecosystems by clearing and expanding existing trails, removing invasive species, or restoring prairie, forest, and wetland habitats. Projects vary monthly.

Other miscellaneous volunteering options include dusting the exhibit hall, sweeping the decks, prepping materials for educational programs, and processing paperwork.

Those looking for a recurring commitment can volunteer by serving at the front desk and helping with the center’s educational programs for kids and adults.
