LRE’s 179MW White Wing Ranch solar project begins operations

November 1, 2024

Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) has announced the completion and commencement of commercial operations at its White Wing Ranch solar project in Yuma County, Arizona, US.

The 179MW project is a significant addition to LRE’s portfolio, now exceeding 3.3GW of operating capacity.

Located on 1,400 acres of private land, White Wing Ranch is poised to supply renewable energy to the bulk electric grid through the 500kV Hoodoo Wash Switchyard.

Marking the first of several projects planned by LRE in Yuma County, the solar project is the first large-scale deployment of American-made First Solar Series 7 photovoltaic modules.

These modules provide enhanced efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional crystalline silicon (c-Si) panels.

The White Wing Ranch solar project has incorporated land management practices aimed at fostering the revival of native desert ecosystems.

With an operational expectancy of more than 30 years, the project is set to deliver substantial economic benefits to the local community and provide a significant property tax contribution to Yuma County.

LRE CEO Jason Allen said: “We are pleased to begin operations at White Wing Ranch and support Verizon’s sustainability goals.

“We are excited for the future of renewable energy in the region and are committed to contributing meaningfully to the community throughout the lifespan of the project.”

The development of White Wing Ranch has been supported by Verizon Communications through a long-term power purchase agreement.

The project has created more than two hundred jobs at its construction peak and has utilised Terabase Energy’s innovative Terafab technology.

Verizon global sourcing and supply chain senior vice president and chief sustainability officer James Gowen said: “White Wing Ranch is another example of our commitment to powering our operations with clean, renewable energy.

“LRE continues to be a great partner to work with as we further our commitment to protecting our planet and transitioning to a greener US energy grid.”
