Meta Quest 3 Will Be Able To Play AAA Console And PC Games

January 7, 2025

A new way to play games is coming to VR headsets this month, thanks to an expansion of the Nvidia GeForce NOW service.

At CES 2025, Nvidia announced the Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S and Pico range of VR headsets will be able to use the company’s game streaming service “later this month.”

You will do so by heading to play.geforcenow.com in the Quest’s browser, rather than using a bespoke app.

Access is contingent on the release of the Nvidia’s GeForce NOW 2.0.70 update, which it says is rolling out in January.

The limitations here are much the same as those I experienced when playing Xbox Game Pass on Meta Quest in late 2023.

You will end up playing on a large virtual TV/projector screen, with no concessions to the VR nature of the platform beyond that.

“The streaming experience on these devices will support gamepad-compatible titles for members to play their favorite PC games on a massive virtual screen,” says Nvidia product manager Andrew Fear.

Meta Quest 3: What Is GeForce NOW?

The better news is GeForce NOW is about as good as it gets among game streaming services. It’s considered top tier in terms of latency, image quality and game performance, at least with the right subscription.

There’s a free version of GeForce NOW that limits you to 1-hour sessions, and provides virtual PC specs comparable with those of a lower-mid-range gaming PC.

Performance and Ultimate tiers unlock much more powerful hardware, for gaming at higher resolutions and with effects like Ray Tracing enabled.

GeForce NOW Ultimate costs $19.99 a month, Performance is $9.99 a month. Each grants 100 hours of access a month, 15 of which can be rolled over each month if left unused.

Ultimate currently provides a virtual PC with graphics power equivalent to the RTX 4080 card.

More than 2000 games are currently supported by GeForce NOW, but a subscription does not grant you access to them. You’ll need to own them, through one of the popular stores including Steam, Epic and Gog. It’s a little different to Xbox Game Pass.

Nvidia has also announced GeForce NOW is coming to the Steam Deck, “later this year.” An app will be available for the handheld PC, although there’s currently no more clues on the timescale of its release.
