Morocco powers 90% of its electric trains with renewables

February 14, 2024

Morocco’s national railway operator, ONCF, has increased the proportion of electric trains powered by renewable energy to 90% since the beginning of 2024.

This marks a significant step in the energy transition initiative launched by the national railway operator in January 2022, which initially saw 25% of its trains operating on wind energy, local media reported this week.

As part of its energy policy, the national railway operator is seeking to implement green initiatives and decarbonise all its operations, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.

The green transition is in line with Morocco’s national energy strategy, under which renewables should account for more than 52% of the energy mix by 2030.

Morocco is among the leading countries in Africa with 4,672 MW of renewable energy capacity in operation and renewable projects currently under development and construction exceeding 5 GW.
