New laws are now in effect in Kentucky
January 1, 2025
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) – When we rang in the new year, Kentucky loosened the reigns on medical marijuana. However, the state cracked down on vape shops and what it takes to renew your driver’s license.
Three new laws are now in effect that are getting the most attention.
First, Kentucky joins the ranks of other states where the use of medical marijuana is legal.
Kentucky still regulates cultivators and cannabis businesses. Patients and caregivers must become cardholders for qualifying medical conditions. Those include cancer, chronic or severe pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or PTSD.
New limits are in effect for vape shops.
Disposable vape products are illegal, and there are restrictions on other vape products based on their status with the Food and Drug Administration. The law aims to curb vaping among youth by also adding fines to businesses selling vapes to anyone under 21.
All Kentuckians must undergo a vision test when they renew their driver’s license. This law was passed back in 2021. Screenings can be completed at the site of your license renewal at no cost, or you can also get your vision exam and bring an approval form to your license renewal.
Drivers who don’t pass the screening will be referred to a vision specialist for another exam before their license can be renewed.
