HANOVER, N.H. (WCAX) – The big news out of the Ivy League on Wednesday was that the conference will end its long-running football postseason ban, allowing its teams to participate in the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs starting in 2025.
The Ivy historically was one of if not *the* power conference in the early days of college football, but for a confluence of reasons, no team from the Ancient 8 has claimed even a share of a national crown in football for nearly 75 years. The league’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee had proposed the change, which was formally approved by the president’s of the eight insitutions on Tuesday.
That news was music to Sam McCorkle’s ears: the head coach at Dartmouth has claimed two conference crowns in his first two seasons at the helm, and he says he’s looking forward to the chance for the Big Green and others in the Ivy to test themselves nationally.
“We get the question all the time, right?” McCorkle said of recruiting high school athletes. “You know, you guys don’t play in the playoffs. To me this is one more reason why, what makes a place like Dartmouth, what makes the Ivy League very appealing to a lot of talent across the nation. We’re already getting reactions from recruits across the board, about how, ‘This is awesome. This is huge.’ I think for anybody, you want to play at the ultimate level, you wanna be able to showcase your talent level, your program as a player. This just gives us an ability and an opportunity to showcase the talent level of this league.”
The Ivy League will receive one automatic bid into the 24-team FCS playoff field going forward, with other teams eligible for at-large selection.
