COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — As the holiday season approaches, the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) is urging adults to prioritize the safe storage of cannabis to prevent accidental consumption by children.

Jim Canepa, DCC Superintendent, released a statement on Friday encouraging adult users to keep their cannabis in a place not easily accessible to children.

“As we make plans to gather with family and friends this holiday season, it’s important for Ohioans to understand and follow all cannabis regulations and always keep safety top of mind,” Canepa said.

Canepa also warned of the risks associated with unregulated intoxicating hemp products that resemble candy and lack child-resistant packaging, potentially containing dangerous toxins.

The Central Ohio Poison Center reported that more than 500 children under the age of six in Ohio were exposed to cannabis edibles from January through November 2024, marking a projected 30% increase compared to 2023.

Ohio law prohibits the use of non-medical cannabis by individuals under 21, and providing cannabis to minors can result in fines and possible jail time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can negatively impact developing brains, which continue to mature until age 25.

“Understanding the laws with regard to usage and taking the proper steps to ensure cannabis stays out of the hands of minors will help to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone,” Canepa added,
