WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — With the increase in electricity demand, renewable energy is being looked to more for its advantages.

According to Andrew Liu, an associate professor of Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University, projects that electricity demand in the next five years will by increase 20% by 2030.

However, there is still skepticism with people stating that the implementation of renewable energy sources are causing rising prices with electricity. Liu disagreed with this statement mentioning that higher demand is the cause.

“What caused the rising electricity generation cost is mainly due to natural gas, and especially due to the winter periods when the natural gas demand is high,” said Liu.

Liu also said that by investing in renewable energy more than electricity, it could prevent issues such as blackouts. It could also be especially helpful during extreme weather events such as hurricanes or wildfires.
