State’s Largest Solar Energy Project Launches with Scenic Hill Solar

October 3, 2024

Climate United has announced a $31.8 million pre-construction financing for Scenic Hill Solar’s solar energy project, which will benefit the University of Arkansas (UA) System. This marks Climate United’s first investment from the $6.97 billion received from the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Clean Investment Fund.

The financing will support 18 solar projects across 13 utility service areas, creating Arkansas’ largest commercial and industrial solar deployment. The initiative, led by Scenic Hill Solar, is expected to generate significant economic benefits, particularly in rural areas.

“We are proud to finance this landmark clean energy project that will generate cost savings that benefit students, stimulate local economic development, and position Arkansas as a leader in our clean energy future,” said Beth Bafford, CEO of Climate United.

The project is anticipated to save the UA System over $120 million in energy costs over 25 years, benefiting more than 70,000 students and 17,000 employees. The solar plants are also expected to generate 4 billion kWh of clean electricity over their 40-year lifespan, providing environmental benefits equivalent to reducing over 7 billion passenger car miles.

Bill Halter, CEO of Scenic Hill Solar, called the partnership a “historic moment” for Arkansas solar power, adding, “The investment from Climate United is filling a national gap in financing mechanisms and thereby enhancing this project, which benefits all Arkansans.

The UA System also plans to launch educational programs in renewable energy construction and electric vehicle repair to prepare students for growing industries.

The project, set to feature American-made solar components, will bolster U.S. energy independence and support Arkansas’ economy through job creation and sustainable growth.
