Stock Market News: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq Set to Open Up; Tesla, Comcast, Nvidia, More Movers; XRP Up, Bitcoin Down

January 3, 2025

The stock market started off on a high note Friday, attempting to pare back some of its losses after a long five-day decline.

The Dow gained 173 points, or 0.4%, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.6% and 0.8%, respectively.

The main market index, the S&P 500, has had a tough start to 2025, eking out a small loss on Thursday. It solidified a five-day streak of losses for the index, the longest since the six straight days in April of last year.

According to technical analysis firm Cappthesis, the April losing streak marked the final part of a 6% selloff from its March 27, 2024 high. “Currently, the SPX is -4.5% from its own high from 12/6 (6,100),” the firm noted.
