US-based Synthica Energy has initiated the construction of a new RNG facility in Rome, Georgia.

This facility, the first in the Greater Atlanta area, is set to annually redirect close to 227,000t of waste from local landfills. It is the third RNG facility under development by the company.

The plant’s anaerobic digestion technology is designed to produce RNG while concurrently reducing atmospheric CO₂ and methane emissions by thousands of tonnes each year.

The proximity of the facility to food and beverage manufacturers will decrease the distance required to transport pre-consumer waste, thereby reducing costs and emissions for these customers, the company said.

Synthica Energy co-founder and chief development officer Grant Gibson said: “At Synthica Energy, sustainability is so much more than the business of converting organic waste into renewable natural gas.

“It is our entire culture – from locked-in waste stream disposal pricing to uninterrupted access to the best anaerobic digestion service in the industry to a transformational waste to energy platform that makes our world a better place. Now we are taking that business model to the Rome/Atlanta area, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Last year, Synthica began construction of its first facility, Synthica St. Bernard, in Cincinnati, Ohio, with plans for it to be operational by 2025.

In addition, the company recently broke ground on a facility in San Antonio, with future projects planned for Houston, Louisville and New Orleans.

Over the next few years, Synthica also envisions the establishment of clean energy facilities across Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New York and Pennsylvania.
