U.S. Army Caisson detachment prepares for President Carter lying in state at Capitol

The caisson detachment at Fort Myer, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, assumed duty to escort funerals in 1948. It followed the tradition of using a caisson, an artillery wagon, to bear the wounded and dead from the battlefront. Three, two-horse teams haul the wagon along with three riders.
