Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi is on a three-day visit to Germany starting Sunday (October 6, 2024), to strengthen India’s cooperation in renewable energy and sustainable development. This visit is set to enhance bilateral ties and foster international collaboration on clean energy initiatives. Joshi’s agenda includes attending the prestigious Hamburg Sustainability Conference on October 7-8, 2024 and engaging in high-level discussions with ministers and officials from Germany, the United Kingdom, and other nations.

The visit is part of India’s broader efforts to position itself as a global leader in energy transition, particularly in renewable energy and sustainable development. 

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the discussions will focus on key areas such as Green Hydrogen, low-cost financing for renewable energy projects, and the whole of renewable energy value chain components.

Elevating India-Germany Relations
Joshi’s visit is expected to strengthen the longstanding India-Germany partnership, particularly in the renewable energy sector. 

The visit will elevate India-Germany relations to create business opportunities and accelerate the expansion of renewable energy in India and worldwide. It will also underscore India’s commitment to sustainable development and renewable energy, fostering international partnerships to address global challenges, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy noted.

India has already made significant strides in this sector. In 2021, the country achieved its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of 40% cumulative electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, nine years ahead of schedule. India is now on track to meet its updated NDC goal of 50% cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of India-Germany relations in various international forums, and the upcoming Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) between the two nations, scheduled for later this month in India, is expected to solidify these ties further. The IGC is a high-level dialogue aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation on a wide range of issues, including energy and sustainable development.

One of the key topics during the visit will be the role of Green Hydrogen in decarbonizing critical sectors like shipping and transportation. Joshi will highlight India’s commitment to utilizing Green Hydrogen as a clean energy source to achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2070. Green Hydrogen is seen as a game-changer in the global energy transition, and India is looking to leverage international partnerships to accelerate its production and adoption.

The Hamburg Sustainability Conference will also address other pressing issues related to sustainable development, including how to unlock the potential of the private sector in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference will bring together policymakers, business leaders, and civil society representatives from across the globe to discuss strategies for overcoming the barriers to SDG implementation.

India’s Growing Role in Global Energy Transition
India’s renewable energy sector has seen rapid growth in recent years, creating new investment and job opportunities. The government’s ambitious plans, such as reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, have attracted attention from global investors and industry leaders. The India-Germany Platform for Investment in Renewable Energies, launched during the RE-INVEST 2024 event in September, is one such initiative aimed at facilitating business opportunities and addressing the increasing demand for capital in the renewable energy sector.

The platform will facilitate creating further business opportunities and new avenues for meeting the increasing demand for capital, support technology transfer and enhance the development of innovative technical solutions in Renewable Energy Worldwide.

India has positioned itself as a key player in the global energy transition. The country is spearheading international efforts to develop and deploy renewable energy technologies through platforms such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA). Joshi’s participation in the Hamburg Sustainability Conference will reinforce India’s leadership in the global clean energy movement.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has stressed that India’s energy transition efforts are not only crucial for the country’s economic growth but also for addressing global climate change. The deployment of renewable energy technologies, coupled with international cooperation, will help India reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
