MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – FOX10 News has learned about two more local victims recovering from the horrific attack in New Orleans.

On Thursday, FOX10 News spoke to Alexis Scott-Windham of Mobile who was shot in the foot and hit by the truck that barreled through the crowd on Bourbon Street. Her friends, Corian Evans and Brandon Whitsett, were also with her that night and suffered injuries.

“Every time I try to fall asleep, I just have flashbacks of what I saw. It’s like when I open my eyes, I just jump because I see nothing but all of the bodies that I saw everywhere,” said Corian Evans.

Evans, a junior at the University of South Alabama, says she was celebrating on Bourbon Street with her friends on New Year’s Eve- a tradition that she’s been doing for years.

Evans says she and her friends were walking o the sidewalk when they suddenly heard screaming and yelling.

“The truck coming down the street- no lights- it was just very scary. I never ever imagined that I would actually go through something like that,” Evans said. “We instantly look up- we just see a white truck coming down the street. We’re thinking it’s just a drunk driver coming down the street- no lights on. I didn’t see nobody driving the truck-I just thought we have to move.”

As Evans tried to jump out of the way, she says the truck only picked up speed.

“It’s like he sped up- he ended up just hitting me on my right side and I instantly fell to the ground,” she said. “Once I fell to the ground, that’s when I heard shots go off. Then I heard somebody pulling my arm, pulling my arm, and they’re like ‘move, move, just move out of the way,’ but I couldn’t move.”

Evans and Windham say they were both driven to the hospital by a Good Samaritan since emergency personnel were overwhelmed with treating other victims.

“I just have bruises on my elbow and my knee and my foot is fractured and very swollen,” said Evans.

22-year-old Brandon Whitsett was also in their friend group that night. Whitsett is a former basketball and football player for Vigor High School.

His mother, Bernadette Whitsett, spoke to FOX10 News on his behalf from Touro Infirmary Hospital in New Orleans.

“He was a part of the 2021 4A state championship team,” said Whitsett. “He played middle linebacker.”

Whitsett explains what her son told her after he was rushed to the hospital.

“He said the next thing he knew, the truck hit him on the side and he fell on the ground. He said after that- he blanked out, he doesn’t remember what else happened. He said a policeman carried him to the paramedics,” said Whitsett.

She says a bullet grazed her son’s back and that he’s stable, but he has injuries from head to toe.

“He has fractures in his back, shoulders and his legs,” said Whitsett. “I’m just blessed that he’s still here. It could have been a whole lot worse for him. He was one of the lucky ones.”

Bernadette wants to thank the community for being a steady hand during these trying times.

“It means a lot and I appreciate every words of encouragement that were given, all of the support, phone calls, text messages…everything,” she said.

Evans is a criminal justice major at the University of South Alabama, and she aspires to become a defense lawyer. She says this tragedy motivates her to pursue justice with even greater determination.
