Container glass manufacturer Vidrala has signed a renewable energy agreement that will cover up to a quarter of the company’s electricity needs over the next decade.

The contract will come into effect in January 2025 and will allow Vidrala to source electricity for its operations at its Llodio (Álava), Caudete (Albacete), Castellar del Vallés (Barcelona), and Marinha Grande (Portugal), glass manufacturing plants.

It signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Acciona Energía for the supply of renewable energy that will cover between 20% and 25% of the company’s electricity requirements for the next 10 years.

All the energy will be 100% renewable and sourced from Acciona’s Energía’s wind farms.

This will be the first PPA that Vidrala integrates into its decarbonisation strategy to reduce emissions.

It will avoid the emission of 150,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere during the contract’s duration.

Along with self-consumption projects and Guarantees of Origin (GOs), PPAs form the company’s plans for the decarbonisation of 100% of its electricity consumption by 2030.

This contract, for which Vidrala has been advised by Advanced Energy Consulting (AEC), adds to the supply agreement that the companies have had since 2018 in Portugal, where Acciona Energía supplies renewable electricity to the Gallo Vidro and SB Vidros plants that Vidrala operates in the town of Marinha Grande.
