Walmart Faces Challenges in Meeting Emission Reduction Targets

December 20, 2024

Walmart recently announced it may not meet its targets for reducing global warming emissions by the end of the century, citing obstacles related to energy policies, infrastructure, and the availability of low-carbon technologies. Initially, Walmart aimed to cut greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 35% from 2015 levels by 2025 and by 65% by 2030. However, the company now indicates that these goals are unlikely to be achieved on schedule, and progress has been delayed.

Walmart stated that it anticipates missing its short-term and mid-term emission reduction targets set for 2025 and 2030. The company also mentioned it might revise these targets next year. Despite previously asserting that the 2025 target was unattainable, Walmart had maintained confidence in meeting its 2030 goals. The expansion of its business, including new store openings and increased product shipments, has made emission reductions more challenging.
