MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – City of Myrtle Beach leaders are speaking out following an incident that took place in a popular part of town.

On Saturday after 6 p.m., Myrtle Beach police responded to calls of a reported large fight and someone brandishing a weapon along Ocean Boulevard.

Three juveniles were detained in relation to the incident.

The police department said no gunshots were fired and there were no reported injuries. However, it’s incidents like this one that the city aims to avoid through the use of its juvenile curfew.

Mayor Mark Kruea said the curfew is “just one tool,” and that there are improvements needed to make Ocean Boulevard a family-friendly environment.

“There are great things that are in process, and we’re working to make Ocean Boulevard a safe, family-friendly environment that it needs to be,” Kruea said.

Saturday’s incident, however, happened before the curfew hours.

Kruea said given the crowd, he believes law enforcement responded to the situation well, but “there’s much more that we still need to do at this point,” to manage large crowds and prevent similar situations from happening again.

Areas of improvement Kruea brought up include filling police vacancies within the department.

“We’re absolutely working on this. We understand that there are things that need to be tweaked, we understand that we’re still police officer short, we need to figure out a way to fill those vacancies,” Kruea said.

He also mentioned looking into the deployment of the police department’s resources and communicating the message of the curfew to other communities where juveniles may be visiting from.
