4 charter school students hospitalized after taking cannabis gummies
March 24, 2025
Four students at a charter school in Mercer County were taken to local hospitals Monday morning after they fell ill from ingesting suspected cannabis gummies, officials said.
The incident occurred at the STEMCivics’ high school campus on Pennington Road in Ewing shortly before 9 a.m., township police said.
The school’s head and founder, Leigh Byron, told NJ Advance Media Monday evening that the students’ parents have informed school officials that their kids are all OK and now at home.
“We identified the student who gave them gummies and took appropriate disciplinary action,” Byron said.
A Ewing police spokesperson said the department referred the matter to child protective authorities for investigation.
The state Department of Education revoked STEMCivics’ charter in January, effective June 30 of this year. The revocation came after the school failed to implement a remedial plan following its placement on probation in February 2023 for issues regarding compliance with its charter, state laws and regulations, according to a DOE letter first published by the Trentonian.
According to the report, the school pushed back in a letter from its board of trustees, asking for reconsideration, including having Byron ‘step aside if it will allow the school to remain open, as he is deeply committed to the students and their success.’”
STEMCivics has two campuses, with the other being a middle school in downtown Trenton. The school calls the Ewing campus, PURPLEfect Palace, and the Trenton school campus, PURPLEfect Parc.
