SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — Five burglary suspects are on the run and one is in custody after a smash-and-grab at a cannabis shop led to a wild chase in Snohomish County early Sunday morning.
The break-in at The Kushery Cannabis in the 5600 block of 134th Place Southeast in unincorporated Everett marks the latest in a series of ram-raid burglaries targeting the strip mall.
Surveillance video from Whistle Stop Tap House & Deli next door captured the incident around 2 a.m. Sunday. The footage shows a car backing into a concrete barrier, pushing it out of the way, then ramming into the cannabis shop three times, creating a gaping hole in the storefront.
Masked suspects then ran inside and stole an unknown amount of money or merchandise before fleeing in a getaway vehicle.
The concrete barriers, about a dozen in total, were installed outside the row of businesses after multiple previous break-ins, according to employees at Whistle Stop. The Kushery had been hit twice before, while Whistle Stop was hit three times, all in the past five or six years.
“Targeted … for sure they’re targeted,” said Jay Humrich, a regular customer at Whistle Stop. “Just blows my mind.”
The getaway car sped off when Mill Creek police and Snohomish County deputies arrived. Deputies said the chase ended shortly after they deployed spike strips. The stolen Kia Optima crashed in a ditch near the 18000 block of State Route 9.
Six suspects wearing masks, gloves and hooded jackets exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
A King County Sheriff’s Office K-9 tracked down one suspect, a 17-year-old boy, who was taken to Swedish Hospital for evaluation. He is expected to be charged with obstruction, malicious mischief, taking a motor vehicle without permission and burglary.
The five other suspects remain at large.
“It is very strange, and I wish they’d have a way to catch these people,” Humrich said.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 425-388-3845.
