’70s Folk Music Icon Pulls All Music From Amazon: ‘We All Have to Give Up Something’

October 10, 2025

One thing you can always count on is if Neil Young has something on his mind, he won’t be afraid to share it. The prolific folk artist recently updated his site, the Neil Young Archives, with a big announcement regarding his music catalog.

His full announcement read:

“FORGET AMAZON AND WHOLE FOODS. FORGET FACEBOOK,” begins Young’s message. “BUY LOCAL. BUY DIRECT. BEZOS SUPPORTS THIS GOVERNMENT. IT DOES NOT SUPPORT YOU OR ME. The time is here. FORGET AMAZON. Soon my music will not be there. It is easy to buy local. Support your community. Go to the local store. Don’t go back to the big corporations who have sold out America. We all have to give up something to save America from the Corporate Control Age it is entering. They need you to buy from them. Don’t. They shut down our government, your income, your safety, your family’s health security. Take America back. Together, stop buying from the big corporations, support local business. Do the right thing. Show who you are.”

The singer-songwriter did not specify if products like his albums and T-shirts will still be sold there, but as of right now, his music remains available on the streaming service.

This isn’t the first time Young has pulled his creative content from a platform. Nearly two months ago, he announced he’d be ceasing his use of Facebook and Instagram, citing their “use of chatbots with children.”

In 2022, Young also vowed to pull all of his content from Spotify when they announced they’d be the exclusive platform for Joe Rogan, voicing that he was deeply disturbed by Rogan’s anti-vaccination stance. He inspired several other artists to pull their content as well, including Joni Mitchell, India.Arie, and his former bandmates Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, and David Crosby. Young rejoined in 2024 after Rogan signed a $250 million deal to make his podcast available on multiple platforms again.

“Other music services [including] Apple, Amazon, Qobuz, Tidal… have started serving the same disinformation podcast I had opposed at Spotify,” Young wrote on his website, as reported by the BBC. “Because I cannot leave all those services like I did Spotify, because my music would have no streaming outlet to music lovers at all, I have returned.”

Just to note, the aforementioned artists returned to Spotify at various points as well.
