CAIRO – 25 May 2026: Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad announced the completion of the first and second phases of the national project to convert 2,262 buses operated by the Cairo and Alexandria Public Transport Authorities to natural gas. During these two phases, a total of 754 buses were converted from diesel to natural gas.

The Minister also announced the launch of a third phase that will include the conversion of an additional 200 buses, according to a Monday statement.

Minister Awad said that the project aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, enhance the quality of services provided to citizens, and support a clean and environmentally friendly public transportation system.

The process begins with dismantling the conventional diesel engine components and removing the old fuel lines, followed by refurbishing the engine compartments and preparing the installation points for natural gas cylinders. New mounting brackets are then designed and manufactured to suit the different bus models. Finally, natural gas supply systems, control systems, sensors, and gearbox programming are installed, ensuring the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.
