April 9, 2025

Local, state and company officials made the announcement Wednesday, revealing for the first time that the company behind the Wood County data center project is Meta.

WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — Two years after its initial announcement, the company behind a massive multi-million dollar technology project in Wood County has officially been revealed.

Regional Growth Partnership, JobsOhio, local officials and company representatives spoke during the official announcement Wednesday morning at Bowling Green State University.

The company responsible for the project was identified only as a “Fortune 200” when the project was first discussed in 2023 and went unnamed until Wednesday’s press conference, when it was finally disclosed as Meta, the parent company for Facebook.

The Middleton Township development will be one of the tech giant’s latest AI-powered data centers and is Meta’s second data center in Ohio. It marks the company’s 28th data center worldwide.

“We selected Middleton Township for a number of reasons, including great access to infrastructure and renewable energy, a strong pool of talent and a wonderful set of community partners that have helped us move this project forward,” said Brad Davis, director of data center community and economic development at Meta.

According to the Regional Growth Partnership, Meta “makes a concerted effort to source labor and materials locally and provide substantial contributions directly to the community.”

The data center project was first discussed in 2023 and codenamed “Project Accordion.” At the time, it was a planned $750 million facility with 50 full-time employees and expected to open in 2030.

During Wednesday’s press conference, further details were released. The data center is now anticipated to be operational sometime in 2027 and staffed by 100 employees.

The facility will span 715,000 square feet and be known as The Bowling Green Data Center, located near Dixie Highway on 280 acres of land.

The Bowling Green Data Center’s electricity use will be matched with 100% clean and renewable energy, like all Meta data centers, according to officials.

The Regional Growth Partnership described the data centers as “part of Meta’s global infrastructure that brings its technologies and services to life. From technicians and heating and cooling specialists to administrative support and planning, the data centers provide quality job opportunities for local communities.”

The Bowling Green Data Center will be an investment of over $800 million in the state, officials said.

Construction is already underway and Meta anticipates more than 1,000 construction workers to be on site during its peak.

Job listings will be available at metacareers.com.
