January 6, 2025

Governor Jeff Landry is expected to meet with President Biden to discuss his request for a Disaster Declaration.

NEW ORLEANS — President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are heading to New Orleans on Monday to meet with grieving families of victims in the New Year’s Day Bourbon Street attack. An Army veteran drove a truck into revelers in the French Quarter, killing 14 and injuring 30 more.

“To all the families of those who were killed, to all those who were injured, to all the people in New Orleans who are grieving today, I want you to know I grieve with you, President Biden said in a statement released by the White House. Our nation grieves with you.  We’re going to stand with you as you mourn and as you heal in the weeks to come.”

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is expected to be with President Biden. Landry is expected to speak with him about his request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration.

According to the governor’s office, Landry is specifically requesting Public Assistance, Category B, Emergency Protective Measures, including Direct Federal Assistance, to assist with the necessary protective measures as the state responds to this attack, and to provide necessary care for survivors, for the parish of Orleans. Additionally, he is requesting Individual Assistance, limited to crisis counseling for those impacted.

“I look forward to speaking with President Biden today on quickly approving my request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration,” Landry said. “This is no time to play around.  Which is why I am also calling on Senate Democrats on the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee to allow Kristi Noem to get to work on Day 1 as our Secretary of Homeland Security. There should be no gap in leadership. In the wake of the Bourbon Street and Las Vegas attacks, our nation’s security depends on her quick confirmation,”

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is also seeking federal assistance to review the city’s plans, identify potential vulnerabilities and provide additional personnel and resources for the upcoming Carnival season.

President Biden is expected to speak behind closed doors with the families.

While in New Orleans, the President and the First Lady will also attend an Interfaith Prayer Service for Peace and Healing hosted by the Archdiocese of New Orleans at St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square.

The President is expected to land in New Orleans around 3:30 Monday afternoon.
