The Australian Government has published a list of 56 priority projects to upgrade its electricity infrastructure and networks.  The National Renewable Energy Priority List (Priority List) was created in collaboration with states and territories, to provide coordinated support for regulatory planning and environmental approval processes for identified priority renewable energy projects across Australia.

The list includes 32 projects of renewable energy generation and storage, as well as 24 transmission projects of national significance that will benefit from a streamlined assessment and approval process under the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. The Priority List was limited to include only projects greater than 30 MW with a completion date scheduled before the end of 2031, and it is comprised of 16 wind projects, 2 pumped-storage hydropower projects, some hybrid projects (3 wind + BESS, 5 solar + BESS, and 2 wind + solar) and 4 BESS projects. If approved, the projects could provide over 16 GW of additional generation capacity and 6 GW of storage capacity. The Priority List will be updated regularly.

The initiative is backed by AUD134.2m (US$84.56m) in federal government funding to provide increased regulatory capacity and enable the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) to enhance its services for identified priority projects. Australia aims to have 82% of electricity generated from renewable sources by 2030.
