Offshore wind uncertainty pushes New York renewable targets further afield

ALBANY, New York — More than five years after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo inked now-revised deals for offshore wind projects to supply enough electricity for 1 million homes, New York has only a dozen turbines in the water.
And more delays for offshore wind have crashed ashore.
President Donald Trump has indefinitely paused permitting for new projects. The administration may even revoke leases for projects that aren’t progressing toward construction. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the state’s clean energy agency, is behind schedule on announcing new offshore wind awards. And the state is still sitting on $500 million for offshore wind ports and supply chain infrastructure.
Prominent local leaders are also backing away. New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ administration wants to pump the brakes on a transmission project to accommodate more offshore wind. And Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration recently challenged the company behind a proposed offshore transmission line into New York City to specify what offshore wind project it would transport energy from.
