Demand for U.S. pork benefits from a fair trade environment
The National Pork Producers Council says tariffs can slow demand for U.S. pork on the global market.
Maria Zieba, vice president of government affairs with NPPC, says that when tariffs aren’t an issue, customers prefer U.S. pork. “Not only is it because it’s healthy and affordable, but it’s also a quality issue and a safety issue,” she says. “They know that they’re getting a high-quality product.”
She tells Brownfield the Vietnamese market is a perfect example. She says the country’s other trading partners like Europe, Canada, and Mexico have better deals. We are paying an international rate of 10% for our US pork products to Vietnam,” she says. “Most of the big exporters globally are paying 0% for their exports to Vietnam.”
Zieba says the Vietnamese market is a promising export market for U.S. pork and NPPC would like to see the tariff imbalance fixed.
