Macron calls on French companies to suspend investments in United States

April 4, 2025

During a meeting held today with representatives of industries most affected by the tariff measures announced by Donald Trump, President Emmanuel Macron urged French manufacturers to suspend “upcoming investments or those announced in recent weeks” in the United States.

“If the response to the tariffs just imposed by the American administration is to make immediate concessions or announce investments in order to negotiate exemptions, that is a very bad idea,” he warned, stressing that the response to the American offensive should be found at the European level.

“What message would it send if major European players started investing billions of euros in the American economy at a time when they are hitting us?” Emmanuel Macron further questioned.

In addition to Macron, the meeting brought together Prime Minister François Bayrou, representatives from the aerospace, chemical, healthcare, and spirits industries, as well as members of certain employers’ organisations.
