Nevada’s ambitious venture into cannabis consumption lounges has encountered a significant hurdle with the closure of its first state-licensed lounge, Smoke and Mirrors, operated by Thrive Cannabis Marketplace. Opened in February 2024, the lounge ceased operations on April 4, 2025, citing an unsustainable regulatory framework that hampers profitability .

Thrive’s managing partner, Mitch Britten, highlighted the challenges posed by the current regulations, stating that the compliance costs and product limitations make the lounge model economically unviable . The closure leaves Dazed!, located inside Planet 13’s dispensary, as the only state-sanctioned consumption lounge currently operating in Nevada.

The state’s Cannabis Compliance Board has issued conditional approvals for 21 additional lounges, but none have commenced operations. Prospective operators face hurdles such as securing $200,000 in operational liquidity and navigating complex regulatory requirements .
